Imphal, March 30 2014:
Expressing confidence that the Congress candidates will come out tops in the ensuing Lok Sabha election, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Home affairs today said that the people have reposed their faith in the Congress party.
Talking to a group of media persons at Congress Bhawan today, Gaikhangam who is also the president of the MPCC said, "It is simple arithmetic.
"In a House of 60 we have 42 MLAs, a record unsurpassed before and this is more than enough indication that the people have put their faith and confidence in the Congress party and not the others.
"This reality is not confined to the Assembly alone.
In subsequent elections held for the local bodies such as the Gram Panchayats and ADCs, candidates who were supported by the Congress have won handsomely," he remarked.
It is not only about numbers but is also about the vast network of the Congress party, he said and elaborated that the party has grass root level workers at every block and constituencies.
"From the Mahil units to the youth to the frontal organisations and student bodies, the Congress is a well established party here," he said and added that the Congress party is not just banking on its well established network but more importantly on the trust and confidence of the people in the party.
Ruling out any anti-incumbency factor coming in, Gaikhangam said that the party has done the right thing in choosing the candidates.
Elaborating, the Deputy Chief Minister said that Dr T Meinya has been listed as one of the performing MPs in Parliament.
"If Meinya is re-elected, there is a fair chance that he would be inducted into the Council of Ministers," he added.
As for the candidate in the Outer PC, he said that since the last term was the first for Thangso Baite, he really did not have the opportunity to put up issues on the floor of the Parliament.
"As a first timer, he was not given enough time or opportunity to bring up issues," explained Gaikhangam.
