Workshop on Hepatitis C held at MU

Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University and Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) jointly conducted a one-day workshop on 'Viral Hepatitis - C: An emerging public health and social problem' at the conference hall of the Department of Anthropology, MU, today.
Attending as the chief guest, MU Vice Chancellor Professor HNK Sarma said detection of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the State is a recent phenomenon.
About 130-170 million people worldwide are chronically infected with HCV, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), but majority of them cannot afford the cost treating the Hep-C virus.
In North East India, Hep C prevalence is said to be highest in Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram, the VC stated.
Dean, School of Mathematics and Physical Science, MU, Professor M Dhaneshwar presided over the workshop.
Former Director, Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University, Professor N Joykumar Singh moderated the technical session of today's workshop.
State Epidemiologist of Directorate of Health Services, Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, Gastroenterologist of RIMS Dr K Romeo and CoNE representative Hijam Dinesh were the resource persons.
