Decks cleared for Mega Mock drill

Decks have been cleared for the mega mock exercise on earthquake disaster in Manipur which is slated to be held tomorrow simultaneously at Thoubal and Imphal.
Meanwhile, a notification issued by the DC of Imphal East district said that the multi State Mega Mock Exercise on earthquake will be held at DC Office, Kusum Oil Pump, City Convention Centre, JNIMS and PCTC Oil Pump in respect of the district.
Briefing media persons today at Old Secretariat, Babupara, member of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi, KM Singh said that the exercise will be held for a hypothetical earthquake of 8.7 magnitude which had occurred in Shillong in 1897.It has been planned with an attempt to create awareness among the people about the steps to be taken during an earthquake.
The entire North east region being in an earthquake prone zone, organising such mock exercise has been necessitated, KM Singh said.

The flaws of emergency centre services in its preparation for earthquake disaster and the defects in incident response system would be detected during the exercise, he added.
Speaking at the press meet, Retd Maj Gen VK Dutta, Senior Specialist (CD&ME) said that the State being in earthquake prone zone would suffer heavy casualty in the event of high magnitude earthquake.
38,000 people would perish and 2, 10, 000 people of the State would suffer injury if earthquake of 8.7 magnitude shook the region.
5100 people would perish in Imphal while 23,000 would suffer injury.
In Thoubal the casualty would be 4,800 death and 21,300 injury, Maj Gen Dutta said.
He said delay in assessment of situation and information dissemination are deterrent factors in disaster response in India.
