Tamenglong-Jiribam dispute : ZYF warns of using licensed guns to ward off encroachers

Imphal, March 12 2014 : Expressing serious concern over the alleged inordinate delay of the Govt in settling the boundary issue between Tamenglong district and Jiribam subdivision and non halting of encroachment on land on the other hand, the Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) has warned of utilising licensed guns to protect the land from further encroachment activities of some individuals if the Govt fails to settle the matter at the earliest.

A statement issued by George Phaomei, Information and Publicity Secretary of ZYF (AMN) said that the front has been waiting for the State Govt invitation for a joint meeting as per understanding arrived at during a joint meeting with the State Govt led by the Chief Minister, on Dec 13, 2013 at the Chief Minister Secretariat.

During the meeting it was agreed by both parties that to send a team comprising of officials from Revenue Department of Tamenglong district and Jiribam ADC to be led by Deputy Commissioner, Tamenglong for a Joint Enquiry.

Subsequently enquiry was conducted from Jan 7-9 with necessary enquiry report already submitted to the State Govt for necessary action.

However, the State Govt is yet to invite the Zeliangrong Youth Front for joint meeting to settle the boundary issue between Tamenglong district and Jiribam ADC.

While inordinate delayed is being maintained by the State Govt on one hand, some individuals from Jiribam are still continuing encroachment activities at the border on the other hand, the ZYF alleged while adding that the State Govt could not deny this latest development because the matter has been brought up to the notice of Jiribam Police Station by the villagers whose village land are encroached upon.

Delay tactics maintained by the State Govt will only invite multiple problems, it said while adding that same indicated that the State Govt is working hand in glove with those individuals carrying out illegal encroachment.

The Zeliangrong Youth Front along with the villagers and with the support of the people may utilise the licensed guns to protect land from further illegal encroachment by some individuals in case of State Govt failure to take up immediate steps for resolving the matter, it warned.

Any uneventful situation or consequences arising out of this should be the responsibility of the State Govt, it added.
