CNPO led team visits ambush site

In connection with yesterday's ambush on a convoy of 24 Assam Rifles by suspected UGs at Kambang Khullen under Tengnoupal Police Station in Chandel district, a team of civil society organizations and media persons led by Chandel Naga People's Organization visited the village and interacted with the villagers today.
During the visit, the team inspected the ambush site which is located just a few metres away from the village.
While interacting with the visiting team, a villager namely Ch Morung said that all the villagers who fled the village and stayed in the forest throughout the night under the fear of possible reprisal from the Assam Rifles, returned home this morning.
However, the Assam Rifles did not resort to any kind of torture nor harassed the villagers after the incident, he said.
While speaking to media persons, Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation (CNPO) President Ws Kanral Anal said that the ambush site was located so close to the village and it could be said that the incident happened within the village.

While strongly condemning the concerned organisation which carried out the attack in the village where peace loving people are residing, he also appealed to the organisation not to repeat such incidents in the future and disturb peace and tranquillity of the village.
He also thanked the Commanding Officer of 24 Assam Rifles and its personnel for maintaining calm after the incident which left their personnel dead and injured.
He also appealed to all the other security forces to follow the decent example set by 24 Assam Rifles, who restrained themselves from torturing the innocent villagers even after a deadly attack from UGs.
Maring Uparap Assembly President M Moses, All Tribal Women Organisation (ATWO) Chandel District President Lalam Mate and L Bliss, President Naga Women Union Chandel also strongly condemned the concerned organisation for carrying out the attack very close to the village and created panic to villagers especially women and children.
Th Angdun Maring, Vice-President of Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation, M Wontimla President of Rural Peoples Federation, Angkhong Saka Vice-President of Maring Uparap Assembly, K Marigol Social and Culture Secretary of United Naga Council, Toshelpha President of Maring Napuiya Yinglam, N Shongshir President Bujuur Angchung Puh and L Givson Vice-President of Maring Students Union were also part of the visiting team.
Meanwhile, Kampang Khullen Village Authority has condemned the attack on 24 Assam Rifles.
In a press statement, the Village Authority alleged that the attack was a ploy to disturb the peaceful environment of Naga villagers.
It urged all concerned not to repeat such attacks in future.
The Village Authority also expressed gratitude to Maring Uparup Assembly, Maring Students' Union, MNY, CNPO, RPDF and other civil society organisations.
