The State Transport Dept has urged all vehicle owners of the State to affix High Security Registration Plate on their vehicles within April this year.
Speaking to reporters at the Conference Hall of Transport Directorate at Babupara today, Director of the Transport Dept, M Luikham said that affixation of HSRP on vehicles would not only reduce incidents of vehicle theft but also help in containing misuse of vehicles.
Pointing out that the total number of registered vehicles in the State is 2,18, 000, M Luikham said that only an abysmal 29, 592 vehicles are affixed with HSRP.
The HSRP affixed vehicles are those registered after 2012.None of the vehicles registered prior to 2013 are affixed with HSR Plate.
Luikham further said that incidents of vehicle theft is high in the State as only 14 % of the vehicles have HSRP affixation.
The Govt and its agency would be able to trace stolen vehicles if the vehicles are affixed with HSRP.
Being a temper proof, vehicles affixed with HSRP could not be easily stolen.
Besides, it would help controlling misuse of vehicles, Luikham said.
Wondering how vehicle owners could not afford affixation of HSRP when they are able to possess vehicles, the Transport Director appealed to all concerned to extend cooperation in this endeavour.
Fielding queries from reporters, the Director said that making HSRP affixation on vehicles mandatory is as per a Supreme Court order.
The State DGP and other concerned officials have also been already intimated to do the needful towards this end, he said.
Saying that HSRP fixation facility is available at all District Transport Offices, the Director urged all concerned to get the High Security Registration Plate at the earliest.
