Gold theft: Innocent victim punished

Local women folk of Nepra Major Mamang Leikai urged the concerned department to produce the culprits involved in the incident of missing gold and ornaments worth about Rs 20 lakhs from one Oinam Purnima (56) wife of Gunishore of Sagolband, Imphal.
Regarding the robbery, Purnima has accused one Ngangom Mema, wife of Rajen, who is a helper in the house of Purnima.
According to Purnima, she had lost the jewellery on the intervening midnight of February, 27 and 28 .
Accordingly, Mema was arrested by the police on March 3 while she was as usual helping with the household chores at the house of Purnima.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club, S.Madhuri, secretary of Nepra Major Mamang Leikai Meira Paiba Nupi Lup that Mema was produced at the Cheirap court yesterday.
According to the I.O, Madhuri said that no root cause were found which involves Mema in the theft.
As a result of which, Mema was let off through bail by the judge.
It was also stated that Mema was critically injured when she underwent the investigation process and was later admitted to JNIMS hospital.
Meanwhile, the locals strongly condemned the arrest and torture on the victim Mema without any solid proof and have resolved to fully support to apprehend the culprits involved in the theft, Madhuri added.
