Cancer survivor shares thoughts

Imphal, November 04 2012: "Infection by cancer does not necessarily mean death", said former Principal of DM College of Commerce S Sanahanbi who is a cancer survivor.

Talking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, S Sanahanbi who is also a veteran athlete of track and field events admitted that cancer infections are generally detected at advanced stages.

If cancer infections are detected in early stages, they can be cured.

Sharing her own experience, Sanahanbi said that she first consulted a doctor as she felt unwell while participating at several national level sports championships.

The doctor said that the rectum was swollen adding that it was a case of piles.

While consuming medicines prescribed by the doctor, Sanahanbi participated in a national level championship held at Chennai in 2005 .

After the championship was over, she went to Delhi where her children were studying.

One day she bled profusely inside the toilet following which she was taken to a private hospital.

Suspecting cancer infection, Sanahanbi was referred to AIIMS where it was confirmed that she was infected by cancer.

On the advice of doctors, she underwent a major surgical operation.

"All men are mortal.

But I did not feel frightened or worried because I have been infected by cancer and already underwent a major surgical operation", Sanahanbi said.

"After the operation which lasted almost five hours, I didn't feel like eating anything.

Slowly and steadily, I recuperated and now I can participate in national level sports championships like before", Sanahanbi said in a tone full of self-confidence.

"Rather than worrying for death, one should eat good food and exercise regularly.

This way one can lead a healthy life for a long time", she added.

She was honoured with the Prestigious Survivor Certificate on September 22 last year.

"Instead of diagnosing the symptoms and illness of a patient thoroughly, doctors just prescribed medicines out of their own imagination like in my case".

"I took medicines for piles for two/three months whereas I was infected by cancer.

If a doctor cannot diagnose the symptoms and illness, he/she should consult other doctors before prescribing medicines blindly", she added.
