Imphal, December 30 2010:
In the midst of the euphoria evoked by MC Mary Kom winning the fifth consecutive world women boxing championship, this year witnessed brutal murder of four women after being raped.
Incidentally, Manipuri women had already earned the distinction of being vanguards in the fight against socio-political injustices by boldly challenging the mighty British empire during the historic Nupi Lans of 1904 and 1939 .
Not only that, Manipuri women have been at the forefront in the struggle against oppression of innocent civilians, fake encounters, forced disappearance of people and other acts of human rights violation since the early part of 1980 .
Despite all their momentous contributions and remarkable feats, Manipuri women are being subjected to all kinds of harassments including rape and murder.
There were 10 cases of rape and 11 cases of murder this year.
Moreover, four women were raped and murdered in the most brutal manner.
In addition, this year also saw 12 cases of suicide by women while 25 women disappeared under controversial circumstances.
Seven other women sustained injuries due to physical assault.
There were two cases of molest and one case of immolation while seven women complained for justice.
All these data are based on the news reports published on local newspapers.
Two most shocking incidents of crime against women recorded this year were the murder of Chanbi and her daughter Meneka at Phayeng in January and Hatkholing at Churachandpur this month.
In all these cases, the victims were gang raped and their bodies abandoned in nude in the most bestial manner.
The body of Hatkholing was later cremated by the State as an unclaimed body as per an order issued by the Churachandpur District Magistrate.
Chanbi and Meneka were called from their home on January 12 and their lifeless bodies were found on January 23 .
In another brutal case of rape and murder, one Ratanmala from Khurai was found bludgeoned to death at a paddy field located between Langthabal Phura Makhong and Leimapokpam on January 31 .
