Imphal, December 30 2010:
The All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) today observed the 30th 'Rising Day of Meira Paibi Movement' which marked the beginning of Meira Paibi movement in the state on Wednesday at Heirangoithong Makha Leikai.
Chief advisor of Nupi Samaj Hidangmayum Brojeshwori, member of Maibam Leikai Zilla Parishad Oinam Ongbi Mohila, general secretary of Nupi Samaj Th Bormani, founder general secretary of Macha Leima Yumlembam Ongbi Ibetombi and social activist Joy Nongmaithem were in the podium of the function.
Thirty candles were lighted by the presidium members as a tribute to the deceased Meira Paibis leaders of the state.
Th Bormani, speaking on the occasion, recalled that women of the state used torch when back from markets after day's business and also while climbing Nongmaiching hill on Baruni day.
But the beginning of Meira Paibi movement was considered started on December 29, 1980 when women rose up against the torture meted out by security forces to the people.
Ibetombi said that women in the state still don't get their rights.
They grow up amidst the jeer and taunt of the society.
But they are taking active responsibility and share in every major and minor issues of the state with an aim to bring peace and development.
Actually direction of this society is led by Meira Paibis, she added.
Security forces are keeping a suspicious view towards the Meira Paibis since the incident of murder of Th Manorama and territorial integrity in which they are taking a main role.
UG organizations are also keeping an eye to the movement since then.
Keeping behind all these views, every volunteer of Meira Paibis should do their duties sincerely, she urged.
Joy Nongmaithem, in his address, stressed the need to study the duties of Meira Paibis of Nisaband.
They have become an inseparable part of the Manipuri society.
Meira Paibis and Nisaband are one, they are not two different organizations.
Both organizations emerged to save the male community of the state from the intoxicants and suppression and torture meted out by the security forces.
They are like the two faces of a coin, he added.
