Women activists seize books

Volunteers of women organisations have reportedly confiscated six books from a particular stall for indecent portraying of women in the cover pages.
The books were seized from a stall of the ongoing Manipuri Translation Book Festival at Iboyaima Shumang Leela shanglen by a joint team of Kangleichal, AMKIL, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur, CLK, Kangla Mei, CHITUWA, Washak, AMOVA and MEELA, said Kangleichal secretary Elangbam Chanu Tamphatombi while speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today.
Informing that the books were seized during a special drive on February 23 and 26 for carrying nude pictures of women in the cover pages, Tamphatombi named the books and their writers as Manorama's Cries in the Wilderness by Bit Irom, Th Rosie Devi's Rape and Suicide in Manipur, The Manipuri Film Actress by I Usharani Devi, Manipuri Women and Pregnancy by Jahanabi Baruah, Prevalence of Breast Cancer Among Women in Manipur by Dr Th Romesh and The Nude Protest for a Manipuri Women by Purnamashi Devi.
Bit Irom is said to be the publisher of all these books and sold at Rs 99 each at the festival stall owned/run by himself.
The books were printed at Bit Irom's Chingamakha Manipur News Press, she informed and claimed that nude pictures carried in the cover have no relevance with either the contents or the stories.
With regard to one of the covers depicting the nude protest in front of the Kangla by 12 women activists, the secretary questioned on what ground or with whose permission was the picture put on the cover.
She also declared that Bit Irom and the printing press owned by him would be banned permanently.
