Cycle rally taken out against Tipaimukh Dam

Locals of Imphal East today hold a cycle rally against the proposal of constructing Tipaimukh Dam without the prior approval of the would be affected people.
Today's cycle rally was jointly organised by Social Advancement and Research Centre (SARC) Hatta, Prince Club Waithon Makha Leikai and Ideal Club Waiton Mayai Leikai.
Upa Pradhan of Waiton, L Rajesh flagged off the rally from Waiton Puthiba Lampak at around 11 am.
The cycle rally passed through Waiton Mayai Leikai, Makha Leikai, Maning Leikai, Pangei Bazar, Naorem Birahari College and ended at Waiton Puthiba Lampak.
The rallyists shouted slogans against construction of Tipaimukh dam.
Talking to mediapersons in connection with the protest rally, President of Ideal Club Waiton M Radhamohan contended that the claim of government of Manipur that construction of Tipaimukh dam is essential to solve the problem of shortage of power in the state is complete hogwash.
He pointed out that the same assurance had been given to the people at the time of constructing the Loktak Hydro Power Project and Leimakhong Heavy Fuel Power Project.
But the people of Manipur continue to reel under the impact of shortage of power till today.
Rather than giving any benefits to the people, such projects affect many agricultural and forest areas with flooding of low lying areas.
Construction of Tipaimukh dam would lead to displacement of many people following submergence of many inhabited low lying area.
