Imphal, December 21, 2013:
Accusing Home Minister Gaikhangam of alleged failure to trace, book and punish police personnel as well as individuals involved in various acts of crime, All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation (AMMSO) insisted that Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam tender resignation on moral ground in case justice cannot be delivered to the victims at the earliest.
Speaking to newspersons at its Minuthong Hatta office today, AMMSO president Farid Khan said not only has the police department under the Home Minister failed to trace those responsible for triggering bomb blasts in Imphal city areas recently but incidents of a Sora youth killed in alleged police firing and rape of a girl student in Yairipok area continue to enjoy freedom.
In addition to these incidents, police crackdown against Muslim clerics and devotees at a Mantripukhri Mosque and the Home Minister's comment that about 20 Manipuri Muslims left the State to train with the Taliban amount to mocking the Meitei Pangals (Muslims) and their religious sentiments, Farid maintained.
Asserting that Manipuri Muslims have nothing to do with the Taliban campaign, the student activist demanding apology and clarification from the DyCM cautioned that AMMSO with the support of civil society organisations such as UMMWDO and MSUM will launch intense agitation for his irresponsible remarks.
Farid also observed that increasing number of unwanted incidents during the stint of Gaikhangam as the Home Minister as well as solution eluding these cases might be due to the Deputy CM's busy schedule as the DyCM and continuing as the MPCC president.
If one of the challenging tasks is relinquished Gaikhangam might be able to perform more effectively, he opined.
