Altogether 2020 litres of country made liquor seized by police and Excise personnel from different places have been set ablaze in the office complex of Excise Assistant Commissioner at Lamphelpat today.
Of the total quantity of liquor disposed today, 235 litres were seized by Singjamei Police and handed over to Excise, 60 litres were seized by Patsoi Police, while the remaining 1715 litres were seized by Special Enforcement Cell of Excise Department, said Excise Assistant Commissioner
K Joykumar.
He informed that altogether 6235 litres of country made liquor have been disposed off in the month of December while Rs 50,000 collected as fine has been accrued to the Government exchequer.
The Assistant Commissioner further informed that intensive anti-liquor drive would be launched in view of the New Year festival and the ensuing Assembly elections.
According to a report available with the Election Commission of India, expenditure on liquor is the second largest area after distribution of cash in which candidates invested money.
There has been standing instruction of the ECI to check huge expenditures on liquor by candidates to woo voters.
Appealing to all rice hotels not to offer liquor to customers, the Assistant Commissioner stated that similar raids would be conducted at places where Indian Made Foreign Liquors are available.
