CADA continues protest against legalisation of alcohol

Imphal, November 20 2022:
Mounting pressure on the State Government to revoke the decision to partially lift the prohibition on alcohol, the Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol in association with various local women's organisations carried out protests across five separate locations today.
At Uripok Huidrom Leikai under Imphal West district, All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Uripok Huidrom Leikai Women's Development Association in collaboration with CADA organised a sit-in protest today.
Separately, All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Nganuleima Women's Development Association and CADA jointly staged a sit-in protest at Uripok Khaidem Leikai today.
At Iroisemba, a sit-in, protest was staged in front of the Youth Development Association office.
The protest was organised by Iroisemba Apunba Nupi Lup, Iroisemba Youth Development Club, All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and CADA.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Sobita, secretary general, Nupi Samaj pointed out the trend of young women becoming habituated to alcohol consumption under the guise of attending birthday parties and feasts.
Speaking out against this trend, she added that alcohol abuse has deteriorated the relationship between siblings.
Irom Phulindro, president, Iroisemba Youth Development Club highlighted the importance of discussing the pros and cons of alcohol legalisation and spreading awareness among the people in this regard.
The protestors shouted slogans such as "Alcohol legalisation cannot be enforced in Manipur", "Save people from alcohol abuse" etc and called for prompt action to revoke alcohol legalisation.
Similarly a sit-in protest was also staged at Tera Lukram Leirak jointly organised by Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak by Nupi Weaver's' Welfare Association, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and CADA.
Khundrakpam Nandarani, president, Nupi Weaver's Welfare Association asserted that with alcohol legalisation, alcohol will be freely available which could potentially lead to an increase in domestic violence cases in the State, she opined.
Lastly, the Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (Thoubal Ima), Hiyanglam Meira Paibi, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and CADA jointly organised a sit-in protest at Hiyanglam under Kakching district today.
