Manipur's per capita income low: Union minister

Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) organised a one-day national seminar on growth and development of MSME under the theme 'Strengthening the backbone of Indian Economy' at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, here, on Sunday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, union minister for MSME Narayan Rane observed how development of a state is directly related with its per capita income and pointed out that the per capita income of Manipur is low as compared with other states including neighbouring states like Nagaland, Assam and Sikkim.
He then assured of providing all possible assistance from the ministry in improving the state's per capita income.
He also linked per capital income growth with development of infrastructures in different sector including education, healthcare among others, and stressed the need for effective planning.
The union minister emphasised on the importance of improving economy by providing training to the public in different fields.
Informing about PM Modi's vision to make the country self-reliant in the next 25 years, he called for public participation and making the journey towards this goal a public movement.
He also spoke of the relation of MSME with GDP & per capita income, and assured of clearing proposals from the state in relation with MSME.
The state should also play its part in increasing export and reducing import of goods.
While agriculture is an important sector to boost the socio-economic condition, the state needs to think beyond agriculture and focus on other sectors such as handloom and handicraft too, he pointed out.
The minister also called for making the state tourism and industrial hubs in the next five years.
Narayan Rane also emphasised on the fact that Manipur will emerge as the premier gateway to ASEAN because of the combined efforts of governments of India and Manipur.
The establishment of one of the technology centres of Ministry of MSME and the implementation of the scheme Promotion of MSMEs in North Eastern Region & Sikkim under the new guidelines will further contribute in making Manipur an important import-export hub for the NE region, he added.
Ministry of MSME also signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) with department of textiles, commerce, industry and department of tourism, Government of Manipur; and three platforms of Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) with InvoiceMart, M1Xchange and RXIL.
Ministry of MSME secretary BB Swain, Manipur chief secretary Rajesh Kumar, trade, commerce & industries commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jha, Ministry of MSME additional development commissioner Sudha Keshari, joint secretary Mercy Epao and additional development commissioner Dr Ishita G Tripathy, other senior officers from the Ministry of MSME and Government of Manipur were also present during the event.
