ECI assesses LS poll security

The Election Commission of India and State Government officials today discussed about deploy- ment of security forces in the State for the Lok Sabha election which is likely to be held in April or May this year.
Deputy Election Commissioner Balakrishnan discussed about deployment of security forces with Chief Electoral Officer O Nabakishore, ADGP LM Khaute, Principal Secretary (Home) Niklesh Jha and Joint CEO N Prabin in the form of video conference.
The video conference studied the option of holding the Lok Sabha election in Mani-pur either in a single phase or in two phases as well as secu-rity requirements for both options.
They also discussed strength of central paramilitary forces presently deployed in Manipur.
State Government officials informed the Deputy Election Commissioner that 75 companies of central paramilitary forces were deployed in the State during the last parliamentary election.
The number of polling stations at that time was 2195 which has now increased to 2662.As such, more companies of central paramilitary forces would be required, stated the State officials.
The ECI was also inform-ed that 40 companies of cen- tral paramilitary forces are de-ployed in Manipur at present.
On the other hand, the CEO has discussed a number of issues including security situation with regard to the Lok Sabha election with DCs and SPs.
