Imphal, April 09 2015 :
Cinema is not only about entertainment, but also a medium to reflect society through the creative works of artistes and film makers.
This was stated by Dy CM Gaikhangam while addressing the 9th Mami Numit observed today at the MFDC auditorium, Palace Compound.
Gaikhangam said that cinema immensely contributes in building a better society.
As such, collective efforts of all concerned is necessary for developing Manipuri cinema.
Unlike book, cinema has a wider reach of audience.
As such, instead of restricting the role of cinema to just entertainment, cinema would play a far more important role in shaping society if the messages disseminated through the medium are deciphered and absorbed positively, the Dy CM said.
He also said that both the artistes from the valley and hill areas are talented.
Gaikhangam also pointed out that film artistes of the State, who set their foot in the film world without any expectation of getting rewarded with incentives like their counterparts do in other film industries, are rendering yeomen's service to the society.
Their acting skill and the films are no less inferior to big budget films of other States or countries.
He also stressed the need for resource mobilisation.
The observation programme was jointly organised by the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) and Film Forum, Manipur.
The day is being observed every year to mark the birth of Manipuri Cinema.
