Keibul Lamjao National Park dug up, 2 held

An excavator operator and a helper have been caught red-handed digging and constructing ring bandh in a portion of the protected Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP).
A ring bandh was being constructed using an excavator in Komlakhong side of the park when Deputy Conservator of Forest (Park and Sanctuary) Arun and Range Officer L Biramangol apprehended the excavator operator and his helper last night with the help of police teams from Mayang Imphal and Bishnupur, informed an official source.
KLNP staff had an inkling that some elements were determined to encroach upon the protected park and they have been keeping a strict vigil since a couple of days back.
The apprehended excavator driver and his helper have been identified as Brahmacharimayum Basanta of Langjing Achouba and Moirangthem Komol of Takyel Kolom Leikai respectively.
They were produced before a Duty Magistrate today who remanded them to police custody for five days.
They were reportedly constructing the ring bandh at the behest of a man from Soibam Leikai, Imphal East.
However, Basanta and Komol have not yet disclosed the name of the encroacher.
