Imphal, February 09, 2012:
Adding another feather in its cap, though lately, a kidney was removed successfully from a patient through key-hole surgery using laparoscopic nephrectomy for the first time by surgeons at the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) last week.
To summarise the success story, meet Luirai- wang, on whom the kidney surgery was performed.
"It's cost-effective.
Post operation, you don't need to spend several months on bed for your recovery," says Luirawang, a resident of Khunjao Village in Ukhrul district.
Luirawang came to Imphal to have his left kidney, which stopped functioning, operated at RIMS.
On February 3 last, surgeon at RIMS hospital removed his kidney successfully using laparoscopic technology.
It is pertinent to mention here that since the past few years, some private clinics and health centres had begun performing kidney operation through key-hole surgery.
In case a patient approach any privately run hospitals for kidney operation (removal), one has to spend around Rs 25,000 - Rs 30,000. Now, one of the biggest Government-run hospitals has the facility to perform kidney operation with low-cost.
Laparoscopic nephrectomy enables patient to undergo operation at low cost, and ensures shorter stay at hospital and early return to work.
"It is good that I could return to my work without spending much time for recovery," an elated Luirawang said.
In a chat with The Sangai Express, Prof S Rajendra, Head, Department of Urology admitted that the one performed on February 3 was the first key-hole surgery ever performed at RIMS though many private hospitals had done it some years back.
He further said that in normal key-hole operation, patient had to take at least a month for recuperation.
But the laparoscopic technology provides speedy recovery of patients post-operation and shorter stay at hospital.
They could return to their normal work sooner.
Dr Rajen said a patient can gain strength to walk or move after around three days after surgery through laparoscopic nephrectomy.
Patients can now avail the opportunity of checking any kidney related problem through laparoscopic nephrectomy, he added.
Just when this reporter was guided to the Urology Ward of RIMS along with Dr Rajendra, a jubilant Lurawang said, "Since I am from far-flung area, I decide to go back home after some days so that I need not come back just for check-up.
I may return home after a check-up on Monday".
