Imphal, February 09, 2012:
A total of 3193 kilograms of ganja worth Rs 100 crores in the international market were consigned to flames by a Government drug disposal committee today.
Along with the ganja, 176.70 grams of Heroin and 1691 psychotropic tablets were also destroyed under the supervision of a standing drug disposal committee comprising of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Customs Department, Narcotics and Affairs of Border (Nab) and Forest Department at Koirengei.
Chairman of the committee S Biswas, who is the zonal Director of NCB, Guwahati headed the disposal team.
NCB sleuths working in the Imphal regional office seized the drugs from different parts of the state since 2010 under ten separate cases, said the Bureau's Regional (Imphal) Director Vijay Shahasane and added that some of the accused are serving time in jail, while others have been released on bail by the Court.
Though the value of the ganja burnt has been pegged at about Rs 1 crore in the local market it will shout up to about Rs 100 core or more in the international market, he said adding that the drugs were destroyed under the provision of the NDPS Act after obtaining the necessary order from the designated Court.

Stating that there is a provision in the Bureau to give reward to anybody who gives information about trafficking and concealment of drugs, Vijay urged the public to cooperate with the ongoing efforts of the NCB to combat drug menace.
Owing to suitable soil, Ganja grown in Manipur is highly priced and in high demand by drug barons of the country and abroad, analysts said adding that cultivation of this narcotic plant has been replaced gradually with poppy plantation as it brings in more profit.
Recently NCB regional office Imphal revealed that mobile heroin manufacturing units have come up in the State posing a big threat to the global fight against drug menace.
With the coming up of 'clandestine' heroin manufacturing units in the State, the price of the drug has considerably dropped in the local market, it said.
Along with several anti-drug organizations and Central forces, NCB has also destroyed large chunk of poppy and ganja cultivation in the remote hill areas since the last few years.
