4th School Meet to begin today with students from 9 districts

The 4th School Meet 2011-12 organised by the Department of Education (S) will begin tomorrow at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium with students from the nine districts of Manipur competiting in different events.
Speaking to reporters in a press meet held at the office of the department at Lamphelpat, Director W Rajen said that the department has been organising the school meets since 2008 with an aim to unite the students of different communities from all over the state on the common platform of sports.
Around 1000 students and teachers from different schools in the nine districts of the state will be participating in the meet.
In all 90 students along with two guides from each districts will compete in 12 different items in individual and team events, he said.
Besides, there are many non-competitive entertainment programmes especially organised to unite the students of different communities without the sense of competition.
Interaction with reknown film artistes, sportspersons and singers will be organised as a motivational event during the meet, he said.
Unlike past editions, the 4th School Games will now have cash prizes for winners.
First position holders in individual will be awarded Rs 3000 along with certificates while the prize amount will be Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 for second and third position holders respectively.
In team events, the prize amount will be Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 for first, second and third position holders respectively, he added.
The previous edition of the meet was organised at a cost of Rs 41 lakhs.
However, the estimated cost is being calculated at Rs 48,86,000 for this year’s edition.
Students from all the districts will compete in Volleyball, Badminton, Mukna, Kho-Kho, Athletics, Marathon, Painting, Elocution, Symposium amd March Past during the four day event.
The inaugural function will be held at 9.30 am tomorrow at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, Imphal.
Principal Secretary of Education (S) Dr J Sureshbabu and Director of Education (S) W Rajen will graced the inaugural function as Chief Guest and President respectively.
General Secretary of All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) L Ranjit Roy will also attend the function as Guest of Honour.
