Instal fish strainer, LDA urges NHPC

Imphal, July 20 2022: Chairman of Loktak Development Authority (LDA) M Asnikumar Singh has written to Group General Manager of Loktak Hydro Electric Project (Loktak Power Station), NHPC Ltd, Komkeirap HN Satyanarayan to construct a fish strainer at the mouth of the power channel at Ningthoukhong to prevent fishes from entering the power channel.

In the letter, M Asnikumar said that putting up the fish strainer will help the fishing community to sustain their livelihood and create a balance between power generation and livelihood sustenance.

The LDA Chairman said that there is an important issue of loss of fish in Loktak Lake due to the water transfer system deployed by the Loktak Hydro-Electric Projectt for electricity generation using the power channel to draw water from the lake.

As a consequence of this electricity generation, many fishers are at the risk of losing their livelihood and it also leads to sheer wastage of valuable resouces of the lake, he said and added and is ready to assist in the Loktak Hydro Electric Project through its technical team.
