Farmers' body fears spread of African swine fever

Manipur Progressive Piggery Farmers Association on Saturday urged the government to take necessary measures to prevent possible spread of the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Kamjong district.
Speaking at Manipur Press Club, Association's general secretary Khundrakpam Malemnganba emphasised that the government contain outbreak of ASF in Kamjong district to prevent its spread throughout the state.
While stating that spread of the disease will have drastic effect on the pig farmers and curtail their primary source of income, he said prevention is the only avail able means to fight African swine fever as there is no vaccine as yet.
On the other hand, there are reports of smuggling pigs from Myanmar which might be the cause of the disease, the secretary claimed and urged the government authorities to initiate stringent measures to stop import of the calamitous disease.
