AMSU, DESAM, MSF, KSA, AIMS and SUK have demanded the state government to appoint a regular vice chancellor for Manipur Technical University (MTU) within six months.
In a joint release, presidents of the six student bodies hailed the appointment of regular VCs for Manipur University of Culture (MUC) and Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) by the government and authority concerned and said that they believe these steps will surely develop these varsities.
The student bodies pointed out that MTU VC Prof L Tombi had retired on October 25, 2020, but till now the post of VC remains vacant.
At the time of MTU's establishment it had raised great hope that the institute will bring a new development in the field of technology in the state, but the varsity till today does not have its own land and on top of this the post of VC is lying vacant.
The authority concerned and the government must work to ensure that the varsity does not lose the trust of the students.
A regular VC must be appointed in coming six months.
Appointing of a person over 70 years of age as MTU VC as stop gap arrangement while undermining the University Act will not be acceptable, the joint release added.
