Imphal, November 16 2022:
Nongshum Yakairol Leishem Youth Club and Nongshum Development Committee jointly organised a sit-in protest at Nongshum in Imphal East on Wednesday, demanding resolution to the boundary dispute between Imphal East district and Kangpokpi district, Sadar Hills region.
During the sit-in, the protestors held placards inscribed with slogans like "SoO members should stop threatening civilians", "Set up district boundary commission to put an end to the dispute", "Imphal East's land cannot be given away to Kangpokpi district", etc.
Speaking on the sidelines, Leishem Youth Club treasurer Yumlemban Amarjit contended that the hill range in Nongshum has always been protected by the forefathers of Nongshum village and as such, falls under Imphal East district.
However, some group recently produced different kinds of maps to claim that of Imphal East district area is either under the jurisdiction of Sadar Hills region or Kangpokpi district, even to the point of including the hills in Ningshum, Raising concerns that some group of people may be attempting to take over the land under the guise of claiming it as part of Kangpokpi district or Sadar Hills region.
Amarjit appealed to the government to clear up the boundary dispute so as ensure peace and tranquility in the area.
