Imphal, November 16 2022:
Hill Areas Committee (HAC) chairman Dinganglung Gangmei has said that the government is working towards holding ADC election after completion of the delimitation process for the District Councils in hill areas of the state.
Addressing media persons at his office chamber, Manipur Legislative Assembly complex, here, on Wednesday, Dirtganglung reminded that the last session of the state assembly referred the matter of strengthening District Councils to the HAC prior to passing the 7th amendment and the HAC discussed the same on Wednesday but yet to take a concrete decision as it is a lengthy process.
Since its inception in 1971, the District Councils are yet to be strengthened till date but chief minister N Biren is working towards empowerment of the local self-government including the District Councils and taking keen interest in this regard, he said.
According to Dinganglung Gangmei, material requirements for ensuring efficient functioning of District Councils were discussed during the HAC meet on Wednesday but another meeting will be convened after the end of Manipur Sangai Festival-2022 as members will be busy during the tourism festival.
As views and opinions from stakeholders including former ADC members and civil society organisations are necessary for delimitation exercise for 10 District Councils, Wednesday's meet could not arrive at a concrete decision but the delimitation process would be completed soon.
After completion of the delimitation process, a report will be submitted to the government and accordingly conduct the ADC election, he added.
