Imphal, May 16 2022:
National Highway 37 Surveillance Committee (NH37SC) and Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO) have demanded the government to develop Tongjei Maril Road, which is also known as Old Cachar Road, into an all-weather road.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Monday, NH37SC chairman Singamlung Dangmei said that the road, which is often ignored by the government, is becoming the lifeline of the state after Irang Bridge collapsed recently.
Though the road was renovated in 2019-20, it is full of potholes and overgrown with bushes on either side posing danger to commuters.
Expressing concern over the situation, he demanded the government to develop the road into an all-weather road within three days, failing which they would launch different forms of agitation.
He also urged the government to develop the Rengpang to Bishnupur stretch of Tongjei Maril at par with a national high way.
Maintaining that repairing of Irang RCC Bridge would take nearly six months and detour of NH traffic along the Tongjei Maril road has worsened condition of the road significantly in the past few days, RNYO president Nicolas Gonmei the drew attention of'the government for taking up immediate necessary actions for repairing the road.
