Remand for suspended SI

Duty Magistrate, Imphal West today rejected bail application of suspended Sub-Inspector Thokchom Jitendro and remanded him to judicial custody for smooth investigation of the case in connection with the death of Arambam Nanao on May 2 .
Sub-Inspector Thokchom Jitendro Singh 41 s/o (L) Th Gopal Singh of Heinou-khongnembi Thokchom Leikai was produced before the Duty Magistrate by a team of Imphal police station after the completion of police custody period along with a prayer for judicial custody remand.
On the other hand, defence counsel of the alleged accused filed remand objection and also an application for releasing the accused on bail.
Ak Shantikumar, SDPO Imphal West, the IO of the case submitted through an APP that during interrogation alleged accused admitted that on the request of his batch-mate SI K Tejkumar Singh of Imphal East commando and acting on a complaint lodged by one Kangabam Jackey Singh, he arrested Nanao in civil dress and brought him to the police station with the help of others and interrogated Nanao at the police station.
Thokchom Jitendro further revealed that during interrogation Nanao admitted to have received 15 Tullas of gold i.e 60 Sans from Kangabam Jackey Singh, Proprietor, Mouru & Sons Jewellery, Kangabam Leikai but he refused to disclose the details.
So he had beaten Nanao on his buttock two/three times with a cane.
After the beating, Nanao disclosed that he had mortgaged 25 Sans of gold at a goldsmith located at Uripok Chakrikom, 15 Sans had given to his mother-in-law and 20 sans had been sold.
The accused further revealed that on the same day at around 4 pm, he along with a police team went to recover the gold in a police patrol vehicle and on their way Arambam Nanao allegedly stated that he could give 4/5 sans from his house.
Nanao started to search the gold at his house before exchanging some words with his wife and he brought out around 1.79 grams of gold at which the accused Sub-Inspector scolded Nanao for cheating police.
The APP further submitted that the accused Sub-Inspector revealed that Nanao talked with his wife for around 2/3 minutes before Nanao collapsed inside the room in presence of his wife, Nanao's younger sister and some police personnel and Nanao was evacuated by the police team to hospital but was declared brought dead.
On 10 May, a police team visited the house of Kangabam Tejkumar (37) s/o Nabakumar of Sagolband Kangabam Leirak to arrest him but Tejkumar's wife told them that her husband had gone to Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai on May 4 for routine medical treatment and produced documents related to her husband's treatment.
The APP also submitted that during investigation, the IO of the case examined recorded statements of 21 persons including police personnel of Imphal police station and the investigation is making good progress but it still requires further investigation without hampering and tampering the postmortem report and the CDR & SDR report of the accused Sub-Inspector and other important persons.
It is still essential to remand the accused to judicial custody so as to enable the investigating team collect more evidence and complete the investigation, the APP submitted.
The Court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submissions of the APP and the defence counsel, rejected the bail application and remanded the Sub-Inspector to judicial custody till May 30 .
