Imphal, November 25 2022:
Women Action for Development (WAD) secretary M Sobita has categorically stated that increasing crimes against women in the state is mainly due to the culprits enjoying patronage of powerful people.
Speaking during the observance of International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women held on the theme 'Unite! Activism to end violence against women and girls' at RTC hall, Langol on Friday, Sobita stressed that stringent punishment should be given timely against accused con firmed of involvement in crimes against women so as to prevent increasing cases of such crimes.
Most of the culprits are wealthy people or have close connection with influential individuals, she observed, while adding that release of culprits on bail not only hinders mechanism of initiating punishment but also causes mental trauma and creates fear among the victim parties, she added.
Urging all concerned to punish the culprits rather than backing them, Sobita exhorted the victims not to be disheartened but to have firm resolve and join hands in ending crimes against women.
The inaugural function of the 10-day activism against gender violence campaign was also attended by MU economics department Professor Dr Chinglen Meisnam and Waiton GP pradhan Pukhrambam Surbala among others.
Several survivors also gave their testimonies during the function.
