Importance of protecting 'Sangai', its natural habitat deliberated

A 3-day National Workshop cum Seminar on Sangai Conservation was inaugurated today by Thingbaijam Swarankumar Singh, Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata member.
The workshop cum seminar is being organised by the Palem Panthou Cultural Trust (PPCT) under the theme "Let's Raise Public Awareness and Support Sangai Conservation" .
The inaugural function which was held at the office of PPCT, Langjing Achouba was attended by Chairman, Palem Panthou Cultural Trust Budha Chingtham as the president and Social Activist Rakesh Naorem as the guest of honour.
Speaking as the chief guest, Thingbaijam Swarankumar Singh expressed that the endemic and endangered brow-antlered deer 'Sangai' has immensely contributed towards establishing a unique identity of Manipur globally.
Maintaining that the existence of Sangai has made Manipur a renowned tourist attraction, he appealed to all to contribute in safeguarding the endemic and endangered Sangai.
Delivering the presidential speech, Budha Chingtham asserted that the most important measure to safeguard Sangai is to ensure that the 'Phumdis' are well preserved to provide a secure habitat for them.
Highlighting the importance of making collective efforts to protect Sangai, he stated that the villagers residing in the surrounding areas of Keibul Lamjao National Park have got a significant role to play apart from the efforts of the Forest Department.
He further stated that the workshop cum seminar is being organised to raise awareness on the importance of safeguarding Sangai and to tackle the danger which pose serious threat to the natural habitat of Sangai.
The teachers have a major role to play to educate the students on the above matter, he added.
Speaking at the occasion, Rakesh Naorem stressed on the need of preserving one's culture and tradition to strive for a developed society He also lauded the various initiatives of PPCT which has been making sincere efforts for the upliftment of the Manipuri society and expressed belief that the same will be continued in future as well.
Altogether 15 scholars from the State and outside presented papers in four different sessions today.
