Campaign against gender-based violence begins

Integrated Rural Development Service Organisation (IRDSO), Wangjing launched its 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence Campaign cum observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at IRE College of Fine Arts, Wangjing auditorium on Friday.
The programme held under the theme of 'UNITE! Activism to End Violence Against Women & Girls' was attended by College principal Narengbam Rajivkumar, SDPO (Yairipok) Th Santi, High Court of Manipur advocate Meisnam Brojendro, artist/jury member Thounaojam Nodiachand and College's faculty/jury member Kh Roji as presidium members.
During the event, prizes were also distributed to winners of a painting competition held on November 20 in two categories in connection with the Campaign Speaking on the occasion, IRDSO chief functionary Nonibala Narengbam mentioned that as part of the campaign it organised a painting competition for students of class IV to XII in two categories under the themes 'Child Marriage', 'Gender Equality', 'Cyber Crime' and 'Child Sexual Abuse' to raise awareness on these issues amongst the students.
She also pointed out that as per the National Family Health Survey, Manipur has the highest cases of domestic violence against women in North East states.
The rate of violence against pregnant women is also very high.
Thus, only when equality and respect for each other becomes prevalent in families, an egalitarian society can emerge in the state, Nonibala observed.
