Imphal, November 25 2022:
Even as migratory birds have started arriving at Loktak Lake, poaching activities have also increased, said Wildlife Explorer Manipur.
As many as 12 birds were found dead in the lake early today at Komjao, a part of the Loktak Lake some 2-3 kilometers south of Yangoi Karong, located between Toubul and Mayang Imphal.
The birds were suspected to have been poisoned, said WEM secretary Premjit.
The birds include 5 Uren Porom, 3 Yen Pouraba, 2 Eruppi Mitngoubi, and 2 Urok.
The dead birds were found floating on the water by some who went to cut grass.
Lotus leaves with a white power suspected to be poison on top were found scattered in the vicinity, he said adding there may be more dead birds in the areas nearby.
After consuming the poison, the birds scatter before they die.
Last year, large number of poisoned birds were found dead scattered over vast areas, he said.
With the onset of winter season, migratory birds in large flocks have started arriving at Loktak Lake and other wetlands in Manipur.
The exotic migratory birds are facing a serious threat from poachers.
A handful of people involved in such unlawful activities are also putting at risk the livelihood of the people who depend on the lake for survival.
The use of poison also endangers the lives of the people and fishes.
Such activities at a time when efforts are on to get Loktak Lake recognised as a Ramsar site is unfortunate, he said.
He also appealed to all including civil society organisers and locals to spread awareness on the importance of conserving the lake as well as the migratory birds and wildlife.
