Campaign against gender based violence commences with messages

Integrated Rural Development Service Organization (IRDSO) Wangjing launched its 16-day of activism against gender based violence campaign in line with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women at Wangjing today.
The campaign is being organised under the theme "Unite! UNITE! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls.
The launch function held at the auditorium of IRE College of Fine Arts, Wangjing was attended by its Principal Narengbam Rajivkumar; SDPO Yairipok Th Santi and Advocate Meisnam Brojendro among others.
As a part of the function, prizes were distributed to the winners of the painting competition held as a part of the campaign under different themes related to genderbased violence on November 20 last.
Speaking at the event, IRDSO chief functional Nonibala Narengbam said that the main objective of the campaign was to spread awareness on gender-based violence so as to end it.
She said that the painting competition was held for Class IV to XII students on themes such as "Child Marriage", "Gender Equality", "Cyber-Crime" and "Child Sexual Abuse" as the phenomena are deeply rooted in gender inequality.
Saying that holding such events is very important as children and women face different kinds of problems, Nonibala maintained that "we should stand up against normalization of gender -based in all its forms.
Claiming that Manipur tops among the North East States in crime against women and children as per National Family Health Survey, Nonibala maintained that changes have to start from families.
"Manipur will become an egalitarian society only when there is mutual respect among the people," she added.
Principal of IRE College of Fine Arts Narengbam Rajivkumar said that crime against women and children are not always meted out by men only and as such women must take equal responsibility to stop gender based violence.
