Imphal, June 23 2022:
While welcoming steps being initiated by the state government regarding procurement of locally produced paddy for distribution of rice to NFSA beneficiaries of the state, Loumee Shinmee Apun Lup (LOUSAL), Manipur urged the state government to first take a firm decision on the matter and initiate the task with a targeted mission.
According to a statement of LOUSAL, procurement of locally produced paddy for NFSA beneficiaries of the state can be successful if an expert committee of agriculture and line departments is constituted and implement the same as a targeted mission and conduct proper survey of all paddy lands in both hills and valley of the state.
It also said that identification of compact paddy fields in every district of the state and suitable paddy variety for these compact fields are imperative for successful implementation of the task.
The farmers' body also stressed the need for taking up steps for providing irrigation water throughout the year so that farmers could take up double cropping to enhance production.
While pointing out that some states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Kerala have already begun procurement of locally produced paddy for NFSA scheme from the year 2019-2020 and Assam too has started process for the same, LOUSAL said that farmers' body is awaiting success of the programme and so the state government should take up necessary action.
