Imphal, June 23 2022:
Demanding appointment of regular principal at government colleges, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) locked the office of Education (U) at Nityaipat Chuthek here on Thursday.
Volunteers of DESAM thronged the office of Education (U) at around 1pm and forced all employees out of the office.
The volunteers then proceeded to lock up the office and the main gate, after which they raised slogans demanding appointment of regular principals and addressing the shortages of teachers at government colleges.
On receiving news of the incident, teams of police arrived at the scene and herded away the protestors before breaking the locks.
Speaking with regard to the protest, DESAM president Leishangthem Lamyanba stated that the students'body had been urging the CM, education minister, commissioner and education director to resolve all disturbances in the colleges of the state but no action has been taken up till date.
Although a 4-year undergraduate programme is set to begin from this year onwards under NEP, followed by the Integrated Teacher Education Programme from next year, around 24 government colleges and 6 aided colleges in the state still don't have regular principals.
The absence of regular principal has led to the failure of the administration of most colleges, while over 20 colleges do not have proper library.
There is also the shortage of 440 teachers and 1100 non-teaching staff in the colleges, he conveyed.
Demanding the government to address the above issues at the earliest, Lamyanba demanded rationalisation of transfer and posting of college teachers.
He then lamented the lackadaisical attitude of the government on the matter, while cautioning of launching intense agitations if the government fails to fulfil the above demands.
