Imphal, June 18 2020:
Political parties have filed a PIL at the High Court of Manipur seeking intervention into the planned delimitation exercise.
The PIL jointly filed by 15 political parties prayed the High Court to issue necessary directive to the authorities concerned so that no delimitation exercise is carried out in the State based on the faulty 2001 census report.
However, BJP and NPF were not signatories of the PIL.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, MPCC vice-president Dr Kh Ratankumar said that the first all political parties' meeting on the delimitation exercise was held on June 15 at Congress Bhavan and the second meeting was held on June 17 at the BJP office.
All the resolutions adopted at the first meeting which was participated by representatives of 16 political parties including BJP were reaffirmed at the second meeting.
As agreed at the meeting, the 16 parties filed a PIL at the High Court to halt the delimitation exercise, Dr Ratankumar said.
He asserted that no delimitation exercise should be carried out in the State based on the faulty 2001 census report.
Even though one representative of each of the 16 political parties should sign on the PIL as agreed at the meeting held yesterday, no BJP representative came to sign on the PIL, he said.
Nonetheless, representatives of 15 political parties signed on the PIL before it was submitted to the High Court of Manipur, Dr Ratankumar said.
Veteran politician Okram Joy remarked that the hearing on the disqualification case of seven Congress MLAs who have been supporting the BJP-led Government after the same hearing was earlier fixed on June 22 was unconventional.
As such, legislators who have been working to form a new coalition Government has moved a no confidence motion against Speaker Y Khemchand, Joy said.
He also expressed satisfaction on the resignation of three BJP MLAs from the membership of both BJP and Manipur Legislative Assembly, withdrawal of support by NPP to the BJP-led coalition Government, withdrawal of support by TMC MLA T Robindro and Independent MLA Asab Uddin to the coalition Government and their entry into Congress party.
The coming of four NPP MLAs, one TMC MLA and one Independent MLA into the Opposition camp after leaving the ruling coalition is something very rare in the history of Manipur.
They left the ruling coalition because they could no longer tolerate repeated humiliation, Joy added.
