Imphal, February 13, 2013:
Political leaders and activists of the CPI, CPI (M), JD (United), RSP, Shiv sena and Forward Bloc staged protest rally to denounce recent spate of racial attacks against people of North East region in New Delhi.
Kicking off the rally from Shamu Makhong of Khwairamband Keithel today the protestors initially planned to march upto the Raj Bhavan but security personnel diverted the rally towards Thangal Bazar and crossing Kasturi Bridge ended at the starting point via Nagamapal road.
According to JD (U) State president M Tombi targeting of people from North Eastern States, studying or working in the national capital is a manifestation of indifferent attitude and prejudiced concept against the NE people by both the Congress-backed AAP Government of Delhi and the Congress-led UPA Government.
Along with demanding that Anti-Racism Law be enacted at the earliest to check recurrence of racial attacks against NE people in Indian cities, Tombi suggested North Eastern Council do the needful to set up regional health and educational institutions in Guwahati with compatible infrastructure to ensure that NE students and people do not flock to other cities where their security remains uncertain.
With apparent reference to incidents of racial abuses and gruesome attacks and slaying of NE people, he also branded New Delhi as 'city of murder'.
Expressing similar sentiment, CPI State secretary Dr M Nara called upon the Central Government to pull up and give befitting punishment to accused persons involved in attacking, rape and murder of NE people.
Strongly advocating effective legislation to punish the guilty ones, he also expressed awe as to why both the Delhi and Central Governments have not been able to check racial attacks in the national capital.
The fact that NE people continues to suffer various form of atrocities in New Delhi compels one to wonder whether the 'unity in diversity' ethos is no more relevant these days, observed Dr Nara.
