Dr Sapam Budhichandra of the Congress (I) has been nominated as the common candidate of the SPF coalition for the upcoming Kenthoujam by election which has been scheduled on October 13.The announcement of Dr Budhichandra name as the common candidate of the SPF coalition was made after a lengthy meeting of the MPCC members this evening, said a highly placed source.
An official statement regarding the appointment of Budhichandra as the common candidate has also been issued by the MPCC general secy (administration) Bidyabati Senjam late in the evening.
A resident of Awang Leikai, Budhichandra contested the last general elections as a Congress candidate only to secure the third position collecting a total of 4027 votes.
Highly placed sources from the Congress Bhavan said that election campaigns would begin in full swing within a short period and no stones will be left unturned to win the vacant seat of the Konthoujam AC.
Meanwhile, two candidates including an independent candidate for the upcoming polls submitted their respective nomination papers to the Returning Officer today.
The two candidates have been identified as MSCP candidate Angom Manihar and independent candidate Soraisam Ibobi.
Soraisam Ibobi resigned from the Congress primary membership today.
Both Angom Manihar and Soraisam Ibobi will be contesting the upcoming by election under different parties after both failed to get the Congress ticket for the Konthoujam by polls.
Meanwhile, NCP State Unit president V Hangkhalian has also announced the name of former Minister Heigrujam Thoithoi as the NCP candidate for the upcoming by elections.
The nomination papers of Thoithoi will be filed tomorrow.
Mention may be made here that Thoithoi had unsuccessfully contested ihe last general election and had secured only 326 votes.
Even though Opposition Political Parties Forum have announced Konthoujam Manihar as the consensus candidate no nomination papers have been filed till today.
The last date of filing the nomination papers has been fixed on September 22 while the date of scrutiny has been fixed on September 23.
