Imphal, September 20:
Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Poornima Advani and her colleague Nafisa Hussain who are currently on a visit to the State will visit the residence of late Th Manorama tomorrow at Bamon Kampu and observe the United Nations Peace Day.
Interacting with media persons at the State guest house today evening, Advani said that the Khwairamband bazar, which is manned only by women is unique and acknowledged the role played by the Manipuri women in contributing to the family's kitty through trade at the Khwairamband bazar.
Advani however declined to comment on the case regarding Manorama's death stating that the NCW will first wait for the report of the inquiry commission.
The NCW chairperson further said that there is a pressing need to improve the toilet and power supply facilities at the bazar.
The unique feature of Khwairamband bazar and its traditional values should not be compromised under any circumstances, said Advani and added that even in the course of upgrading the market, no efforts should be spared to ensure that its unique features are not tampered and distorted.
Khwairamband bazar is a fitting tribute to the spirit of the Manipuri women, she observed.
Stating that there is a pressing need to work for the upliftment of Manipuri women, Advani said that the State Government should put its best foot forward to institute a State Commission for Women.
She further said that there should also be at least 30 percent reservations for women at the Parliament as well as at the State Assemblies.
Job reservations for women should also be introduced in the Government Depts, said Advani and added this will help in emancipating women.
Though the Manipuri women have been at the forefront in facing many issues, they still have a long way to go on the education front, lamented Advani.
