Imphal, December 09 2022:
Manipur University (MU) Internal Complaints Committee organised a one-day interaction programme on 'Harassment of Women at Workplaces' at the conference hall of the varsity's Commerce Department on Friday.
Speaking at the programme, president Prof Robita Sorokhaibam recounted that the internal committee was formed in sync with the Vishakha Judgment 1997 wherein a circular along with guidelines was issued to every university and institution with the sole objective of putting an end to harassment and ragging in universities and colleges and violence against women.
Stating that women should not be exclusively focused while conducting programmes to fight gender-based violence as the problem could not be solved by the women alone, she stressed the need for including men and make them understand the issue as well.
Only then the issue of violence against women and problems faced by them could be solved, she opined.
Prof Robita further said that the aim of Internal Complaints Committee is to thoroughly understand gender violence while conceding that due to absence of a proper office, employees and students of the varsity are unaware about existence of the committee.
As such, the programme is being organised to make all concerned aware, she explained, adding that around 5/6 complaint cases were submitted to the committee till now and all of them have been successfully solved and handled.
The interaction programme was also attended by MU Commerce Department head Prof N Tejmani as guest of honour while Manipur High Court advocate Meisnam Brokendro Meetei and Women in Governance (WinG Manipur) convenor Nonibala Narengbam were the resource persons.
