Imphal, December 09 2022:
The Uttra Shanglen, Sana Konung (royal palace) said that the four Pung namely Khurai Ahongpung (Marjing), Wangkhei Soudong Pung (Wangburel), Tera Wangthonbi Pung (Koubru) and Kakwa Lamtai Pung (Thangjing) have been in existence since the time of creation of earth and all these sacred sites are immovable.
According to a statement of the Uttra Shanglen, the Sana Konung has been conducting rituals on the first and last Saturday of Meetei calendar month of Lamta every year at the four sacred sites for well-being of the land and the globe.
Considering its importance, Government of Manipur declared Khurai Ahongpung as historical monument and archaeological site under sub-section (3) of Section 4 of the Manipur Ancient & Historical Monument and Archaeological Sites & Reforms Act, 1976 on September 7, 2000.Unfortunately, none of the governments since the year 2000 protected the site in accordance with the order thereby allowing encroachment on the site.
The encroachment also led to some minor unwanted incidents at the sacred site from time to time, the Uttra Shanglen.
The Uttra Shanglen urged government to protect the sacred site as per Manipur Ancient & Historical Monument and Archaeological Sites & Reforms Act, 1976 so as to maintain harmony among different communities and do not hurt sentiment of the Meetei people.
