Imphal, December 09 2022:
Dairy farmers organised a sit-in protest at Porompat Dairy Complex demanding resignation of the chairman of Manipur Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Limited.
Interacting with the media at the protest venue, farmer Moirangthem Binoy said that they have been deprived of their payment due to the vacant post of the managing director of the union regardless of several rounds of meeting held and protests organised in this regard.
The last meeting held on October 6, which was attended by the chairman and BOD as well as the farmers, agreed to accept nomination of any officer as the union's managing director by the government.
The meeting also agreed to expel BODs, who raise objection against such appointment.
Consequently, the government had on October 12-nominated Dr P Krishnamohon as the managing director.
However, the Union chairman went into hiding since October 14 leaving the vehicle issued by the union in the union's complex without approving the nomination.
Several attempts by the farmers to communicate with the chairman went in vain, he deplored.
Maintaining that protracted absence of the chairman has paralysed the functioning of the union and the funds released by the Centre are kept pending resulting in possible return of the fund, Binoy stated that the chairman's absence has resulted in withholding of milk bill for the farmers due to which the farmers are facing severe hardships.
Accusing the chairman of dishonouring the resolution of the union and plight of the farmers, he demanded the chairman, who was nominated by the BODs for the welfare of the farmers, to resign from his post on moral ground.
The farmers will also submit a memorandum in this regard to the chief minister and the heads of departments concerned, he added.
