Imphal, December 09 2022:
A one-day interaction programme on the subject of harassment of women at workplace was held at the conference hallof the Commerce Department, Manipur University today.
The interaction programme was organised by MU Internal Complaints Committee.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Robita Sorokhaibam, president MU Internal Complaints Committee, shared that the Committee was constituted after the Vishakha Judgement 1997 and the subsequent issuance of guidelines and circular.
The Committee was established with the goal of curbing instances of harassment and violence committed against women as well as ragging of employees in colleges and universities.
She opined that programs conducted to combat the various forms of violence perpetrated against women should not solely focus on women.
Women alone cannot bring an end to this problem.
There is a necessity for participation of men to bring about collective awareness and understanding of the issue, she added.
This problem can be solved only with the active participation of both men and women, she opined.
Professor Robita Sorokhaibam went on to add that the most important objective of the Internal Complaints Committee is to bring an understanding of gender based violence.
She also highlighted the lack of knowledge about the Committee as a result of the absence of physical office for the said Committee.
She concluded her speech by adding that so far the Committee had received 5/6 complaints which were all successfully resolved.
The interaction programme was also attended by Meisnam Brojendro Meitei, Advocate, Manipur High Court and Nonibala Narengbam, convenor, Women in Governance (WinG) as the resource persons.
Meanwhile, Professor N Tejmani, HoD, Commerce Department, Manipur University graced the event as the guest of honour.
