HC directs officials of PWD and Transport Department to appear for NH hearing

The High Court appointed commission submitted their status report on National Highway number 2 today and the Court has directed the officials of Public Works Department and the Transport Department to appear before the Court on December 21.The status report on the National Highway number 2, was submitted by the commission consisting of retired Chief Engineer, PWD, Th Joykumar, Advocate Kh Samarjit and Advocate P Jacob, before the Division Bench High Court of Manipur, comprising of Acting Chief Justice N Kotiswar and Justice Kh Nobin .
The report mentioned that certain progress have been made in the road conditions but there are certain issues which require consideration .
Th Joykumar also submitted that certain sectors where the work is underway, will require bitumen dressing to avoid inconveniences to the people staying nearby the National Highway as well as those travelling along the National Highway .
Th Joykumar also orally submitted that the portion between Mao and Maram is a matter of concern as the stretch lies within sinking zone and appropriate remedial measures might have to be taken up by the authority concerned .
It was also submitted that the sinking may also be prevented to a large extent if heavy vehicles are prevented from plying along the stretch .
Accordingly, the Court deemed it necessary to ascertain the maximum weight (tonnes) of the vehicle allowed to travel along the National Highway number 2 by the Transport Department as well as the measures taken up by the Department to ensure that vehicles over the weight limit are not allowed to ply along the Mao to Maram portion of the Highway .
The Court fixed December 21 for next hearing of the matter and instructed the commission, concerned officials of PWD and Transport Department to appear before the Court on the day for further consideration.
