Interactive meeting on improvement of mithun husbandry held

An interactive meeting was held at ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema with the Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Manipur, on December 16, for improvement of mithun husbandry practices in the State .
A press release issued by the Joint Director (Administration) Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, Manipur, stated that a three member delegation of the Department, led by Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh, Joint Director of the Department, accompanied by Dr Arunkumar Singh and Dr Bhubaneswar Singh, attended the meeting to discuss possible collaboration and technical backstepping from ICAR-NRCM for improving mithun husbandry system so as to increase the dwindling mithun population in Manipur .
Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director of ICAR-NRC on mithun, emphasised on the potential of mithun farming as an alternate means of livelihood .
He stressed that ICAR-NRCM is the only mithun research station in the world and he assured to extend technical expertise in project formulation and to provide the technical know how towards scientific mithun rearing .
From ICAR on NRC on Mithun, Dr N Haque, Dr S Toppo, Dr MH Khan, Dr Jayanata Cahamuah, Dr Stephen S Hanah and Dr Kubu Khate attended the meeting .
The team visited the mithun farm, which is the only intensive farm of mithun in the world and witnessed the use of mithun bull as a draught animal .
They also visited the demonstration unit of Semi-intensive mithun rearing in the farmer's field at Molvum village .
It was agreed to organise a stakeholder workshop in January 2018, at Imphal, to promote scientific mithun farming in the State, it added.
