Imphal, March 14 2023:
Over 30 hectares of horticultural farms, including bamboo grooves and fruit bearing trees and plants, were destroyed by a wildfire near Longsai Part-2 village in Noney district on Monday.
According to Longsai Village Authority chairman Kabidon Gonmei, the high intensity wildfire started from the side of Hengmol village under Henglep sub-division, Churachandpur district.
He said that the fire could have been controlled and valuable horticulture farms saved to some extent from the wild fire had there been at-least a fire sub-station in Noney district.
He lamented that the state government is yet to accord importance to setting up fire station in Noney district and appealed to authority concerned to ensure the presence of at-least one in order to prevent collateral losses from fire tragedies.
The chairman, however, described as fortunate that timely intervention by the locals in the form of using household materials to douse the fire prevented human casualties and minimised damage caused by the inferno.
Meanwhile, a forest fire broke out on the Marjing hill range under Heingang police station in Imphal East district on Tuesday morning.
According to a source in the Imphal Fire Service, upon receiving report around 11.30 am about outbreak of forest fire, two fire tenders of Imphal Fire Service rushed to the site and managed to control the fire by around 4 pm.
Another forest fire broke out on Monday in New Keithelmanbi area around 6 pm.
