International Day of Action for Rivers held in Ccpur

International Day of Action for Rivers was observed on the theme 'Rights of Rivers' at Lajangphai Thingchom bridge constructed over the Tuitha river in Churachandpur district on Tuesday.
Speaking as a resource person at the observance function; journalist Dr David Buhril pointed out that March 14 every year is dedicated to saving, celebrating and creating awareness among people about the importance of rivers.
Apart from stressing the need for preservation of rivers, Dr David Buhril talked about the disastrous consequences that the people might encounter in the event of drying up rivers after some years.
If the present trend of felling trees continues unabated, a day will come when there will be no water flowing in river and people will face acute scarcity of water, he cautioned.
He also talked on how Khuga river and Lanva river in Churachandpur are being polluted.
Delivering the keynote address, Rural Women Up-liftment Society (RWUS) secretary Mary Beth Sanate lamented over the extent of pollution caused to rivers flowing in various parts of Churachandpur district.
The observance function was marked by launching of Lawmlawm campaign by Highland director Dennis Lallienzuol, which comprises various schemes and policies to be undertaken for cleaning rivers in Churachandpur like Khuga and Lanva river.
