Imphal, March 14 2023:
Following confirmation that black quarter (BQ) was responsible for the death of a cow at Wangoo Sandangkhong, Kakching district yesterday, the Veterinary Department has geared up for a vaccination programme against BQ and Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS) .
Speaking to media persons at his Sanjenthong office today, Veterinary Director Dr Ng Ibotombi said that a team of the State Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and the Kakching District Veterinary Joint Director went to the spot on receiving information about the death of a cow due to an unknown disease at Wangoo Sandangkhong yesterday.
Now it has been confirmed that the cow died due to BQ, he said.
Dr Ibotombi informed that a vaccination programme would be launched at Wangoo Sandangkhong and surrounding areas so as to protect cattle from BQ and HS.
He said that cattle are vulnerable to different diseases particularly at the current juncture which is marked by change of weather.
Cattle owners need to take extra care in view of the acute shortage of water being witnessed across the State, he said.
He also appealed to all cattle owners/rearers to vaccinate their livestock against BQ and HS.
Saying that prevention is the best option to protect cattle from different diseases, the Veterinary Director appealed to all local clubs, village chiefs and elected members to help the Veterinary Department in ensuring that all cattle and other livestock are vaccinated.
Informing that due process for National Livestock Insurance would be launched soon, he said that ear-tagging of cattle is necessary for the ear-tag indicates that the particular cattle have been vaccinated.
In case of death of ear-tagged cattle, the owners can claim insurance, he said.
He further appealed to all poultry farmers to be always wary of H1N1 and H1N2 (bird flu).
No vaccine has been developed so far against these infections, he added.
