Imphal, March 14 2023:
The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) has urged the Government to implement the Manipur Land Reforms and Land Revenue Act 1960 uniformly so as to avoid/redress tussle among different communities over ownership of land.
Speaking to media persons at their Ningthem Pukhri Mapal office this afternoon, FOCS president Th Manihar said that some communities who came from Myanmar and other foreign places and settled in Manipur only in 1968 and later have been challenging the integrity and history of Manipur by demanding homeland and changing names of different places.
They have even gone to the extent of claiming ownership over land where they are settled apart from threatening to kill indigenous people, Manihar said.
Alleging that those immigrants from Myanmar and other foreign places have been creating a lot of problems in the State, Manihar urged the Government to implement the MLR&LR Act uniformly in order to avoid/resolve such problems.
If the Government fails to implement the Act uniformly, FOCS would be compelled to launch different modes of agitation to the effect that the same Act is scrapped altogether, he said.
All non-indigenous people living in Manipur should adapt to the socio-political traditions of the land and they should learn to live in harmony with the indigenous people.
If they are unwilling to shed their ethno-centric politics and aspirations, they may go back to their place of origin, the FOCS president said.
FOCS vice-president BM Yaima said that there is an urgent necessity to update NRC and identify all outsiders in order to resolve the issue of immigrants.
He also demanded immediate activation of the State population commission.
